The Future Of Possible is a commercial slogan of a DJI company - a market leader in easy-to-fly drones and aerial photography systems. Of all the possibilities today drones still serve one of the main roles as a support for aerial photography and video recording. DJI is one of many companies offering drone capturing of moments in life.
Photography as a medium for capturing can reproduce almost any event, but can never be life itself. “What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially.” (Roland Barthes, Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography) and later Barthes state that photography “becomes a bizarre medium, a new form of hallucination: false on the level of perception, true on the level of time.” What is an important question to Barthes is how archiving of (present) time has other (multiple) meanings: besides the historic advantage of archive also a big spectre of false meanings which shifts potentiality that image holds in itself. Photography as a medium of (mass) communication is the key feature of modern culture (as well for Benjamin and Sontag).
We can describe drones of today as photography was for Barthes and Benjamin at the beginning of the previous century - a new revolution which just might have a big impact on modern culture. As available product for the mass use drones is toys for grown up's
and from this inventions can have a big impact on remote locations:
- as rescuing
or
- as new meanings of transport
- as new logistics
As from above youtube video, it is not scepticism that raises questions either Amazon air prime will be a successful story or not, but it opens questions that drones will change our everyday lives and create new rules - from security (not to invade people's privacy, not to invade privacy of property)
If drones innovation increases growth is not stopped by fear of invading privacy and lack of determination of making new rules of behaving in vast sky public space we can expect drones instead of cranes building skyscrapers, cutting peak of trees or rescuing cats from branches etc.
Drone innovations might bring us options of drone usage as well as all technology gadgets drones as the new form of social or class hierarchy.
Interesting is what drones might be as an art form. It can be simple graffiti gadget:

Maybe drones might carve big David from marble with chisels or they can in the field of architecture hover in the air as tactile building surface or they can act as one big organism similar to Fuller's cloud structures (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Nine_(tensegrity_sphere).
And of course we must not forget the transport of taxidermized animals ;)
